On Saturday May 9th Copake Auction held an unreserved catalogued estate sale featuring a quality selection of 18th and 19th c. furniture, artwork from several collections, over 30 decoys, collectibles, period accessories, textiles and folk art. “The sale was a success, we had over 200 registered bidders and 463 absentee and phone bids. The artwork and decoy collection was very well received. All fresh house merchandise, especially smalls such as folk art, silver and art are doing very well.” Seth Fallon explained.
A Cobb Island black duck decoy sold to a phone bidder for $4,950. Other decoys brought anywhere from $50 to $800. Weathervanes were sold including a Smuggler running horse ($1,320) and a Snow Blackhawk running horse ($2,200). A very funky rare sheet iron full bodied whale trade sign brought $3,300. A polychrome Jockey whirligig sold for a reasonable $550.
Other eclectic odds and ends included a large collection of fishing bobbers. The best lot, a collection of 43 large wooden bobbers brought $467.50 with others ranging from $50-$200. An 1889 Daisy Plymouth first model (4th variation) air rifle sold to a happy phone bidder for $1,430. The Plymouth Iron Windmill Co. began giving away air rifles with each sale as a marketing strategy and ended up shifting into selling only the guns. “We listed this item on a message board for BB gun collectors. To our surprise we received a phone call within 10 minutes and a great starting bid”, Mike Fallon added.
A watercolor “Boats on Long Island Sound” signed Edmund J. Fitzgerald (New York/Washington 1912-1989) sold for $2,640. An oil scene of two women by the ocean by Taos artist Frederick W. Becker (1888-1974) titled “Will Roger’s Rock” brought $990. A selection of paintings by William McGee (1925-1999) brought prices from $120-$880. A abstract pastel signed “Dorothy Morang 1961” sold for $770.
Sterling silver lots were sold including A Reed and Barton flatware set $632.50, a Lunt “American Victorian” flatware set for twelve ($1,622.50) and a large Sterling lot including “Hampton Court” and “Chippendale” ($1,815). A wood and forged iron eight arm chandelier sold for $2,420. Metal-ware including an iron Betty lamp spike with flying bird sold for $539.
