Copake Auction held it’s 7th annual textile auction Saturday June 30th at 12 noon. The sale is generally held every winter but this year’s sale was postponed leaving auction organizer Seth Fallon slightly anxious. To everyone’s delight the auction received good attendance and the sale exceeded everyone’s expectations. “It didn’t hurt that our textile auction coincided with the Vermont Quilt Festival which brought in some traffic either leaving or traveling to the festival” Seth Fallon commented.
This sale featured over 300 lots including 200 quality quilts, lace, linens, hooked rugs, swatch books and more. The items come from all over the country and are selected throughout the year for this annual event. Copake Auction’s regular Americana auctions consistently include textiles but this sale features a stunning variety of quilts of all ages and patterns in every price range. According to Seth Fallon the sale “Has something for everyone from the beginning collector to the seasoned collector”. Some highlights include: 19th c. quilt, Tumbling Blocks crazy with "Mother" in center panel and dated 1880 $1,320; A rare 19th c. needlepoint sampler hooked rug having multi-floral blocks found in Pennsylvania $1,980; Mid 19th c. historic Montgomery County, PA "single rolling stone" signature quilt. Signed in India ink in every block with family names $2,750; c.1850 Maryland album quilt in unused condition $7,150; c.1880 quilt, pieced Schoolhouse $1,265; New York State album quilt, signed Mary Simonson, Greenpoint, 1855 $1,210; c.1940 quilt, Hawaiian salmon on white. Stunning design $1,072.
High quality hooked rugs were offered including a rare pair of dated 1918 sampler hooked runners with a variety of motifs which sold for $1,100 each. The sale also featured a collection of swatch books, vintage clothes and lots of interesting and diverse fabrics and linens with prices ranging from $35-$600. Overall father and son team Michael and Seth Fallon were very pleased and are taking consignments for next year’s sale.
