Mike and Seth Fallon抯 Copake Auction held it抯 23rd annual New Year抯 Day sale. 揟he weather gave us a break, last year we had 7?of snow all winter and 68?had already fallen to date. We did hustle the sale because the weather started to turn bad in the late afternoon? reported Seth Fallon. The Fallons offered 680 lots in six hours, a fast pace considering the size of some of the furniture. The gallery was packed, and the sale started on time. Approximately 300 people attended the sale. Hundreds of absentee and phone bids helped keep up the brisk pace. Copake Auction always starts the sale by donating a Copake Bicycle logo tee shirt to benefit St. Jude抯 children抯 hospital. In a display of professional courtesy motorcycle expert Michael Fitzieman a Bonhams Auction consultant won the shirt for $85 to a round of applause. Immediately following oriental rugs were sold. The top lot, a 8?x 12?Sarouk went to a Gt. Barrington dealer for $3,410, a 7?x 13?Sumak made $1,100 to a dealer in the front row.
The sale featured mainly American period and country furniture and accessories. Highlights include $990 for an 18th c. Queen Anne Long Island side chair attributed to the Dominy shop of cabinet makers to the phone. Also an 18th c. Queen Anne Rhode Island side chair brought $2,035 in the gallery. An outstanding game board with genre scenes brought $1,320 to the phone, the same buyer later was the successful bidder of the Soap Hollow Penna. decorated chest at $22,000. Lot 70A a NY Hepplewhite mahogany sideboard sold to dealer John Spencer of Salisbury, CT for $8,250. Estimated at $1,500-2,500 a diminutive birch Chippendale chest in red wash sold to a collector after spirited bidding for $4,510. A prominent Mass. dealer bidding against an absentee bid from Penn. Won the Martin Schreiner (Lancaster, PA) tall case clock at $10,560. Lot 89, portrait of a man holding a cane attributed to Ammi Phillips brought $5,280.
Found in a local home the surprise of the day was a George Jones majolica tea set in as found condition, it quickly made $9,350. A Tiffany studios #419 lamp with a Quezel shade sold for $1,760, the consignors had purchased it years ago at a Copake New Year抯 Day sale for $850. A 19th c. two part step back cupboard with 48 lights on the two top doors made $6,875 to a couple who were sitting with their children, it seemed like a fair price for a great cupboard. An 18th c. sack back arm chair bid to $1,870. Mike Fallon really has an eye for folk art and always has some great pieces, lot 185 included 5 fire trucks made from found materials with full documentation from the family of the NY star maker, as a lot the c. 1920抯 fire trucks made $5,775 to a phone bidder against a collector in the front of the audience.
The Fallon抯 introduced the contemporary folk artist Evelyn S. Dubiel to the world at auctions and have watched her work steadily climb from $200-300 to $1,000-2,000. Mrs. Dubiel, a self taught artist started painting late in life and her work is now sought after by some serious collectors. 揟hey bring more each auction, I have always believed in Evelyn and have examples of her work in my own collection added Mike Fallon?
Top lot in the sale was an 18th c. Conn. Bonnet top highboy with architectural elements which sold in the gallery to a Jersey City dealer for $23,100. A diminutive Queen Anne English secretary sold to a Sheffield, Mass. dealer for $4,510. The Fallon抯 love cupboards and they always have some great examples. A Kingston couple purchased a wonderful 19th c. step back cupboard with hinged folding doors for a very reasonable $3,850. The best weathervane, a leaping stag was a steal at $3,630. The sale grossed approximately $300,000 which the Mike and Seth were very happy with.
